MASON BASEBALL WINS 4th REGIONAL TITLE
STATE BOUND COMETS UPSET #1 MOELLER

It was a really “GREAT DAY to be a Comet” at Miami University’s McKie Field on Friday, May 31st.  In no-hit fashion, Mason Baseball dominated the Division 1 defending State Champion Moeller Crusaders 3-0 to punch their ticket to the OHSAA State Championships for the third time in the past 7 years.  Mason has now won Regional titles in 1987 (D2), 2018, 2022 and 2024.  It is the third consecutive time they have defeated the Crusaders in a regional title contest.

Mason entered the game as the #2 seed, defeating Elder 9-5 and overcoming last year’s loss to the Panthers in the 2023 Regional Semi-Final.  In that game senior Alex Koelling (1st team All State) collected three hits while senior Jacob Hanley earned the win from the mound.

In the Regional final versus the top seeded Crusaders, Michael Bilo tossed a “no-no” masterpiece for the Comets recording all 21 outs, striking out 10 batters, surrendering no Moeller hits while walking two.

To say that Comet pitching has been overpowering in the post season is an understatement.  A week earlier, Jacob Hanley (recently named the 2024 Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Player of the Year) tossed a no-hitter to capture the District title.

Mason opened the scoring in the fourth after Anthony Sulek tripled, scoring one run.  Sulek provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led the Comets with three runs batted, going 2-for-3 on the day. Senior Jacob Hanley also collected two hits in the game.  The Mason defense was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Mark Rutherford had the most chances in the field with 10.

The Comets (26-6) will play Perrysburg (25-7) in the state semifinals 7 p.m. Friday, June 7 at Canal Park in Akron, the home stadium of the Akron Rubber Ducks, the Double-A minor league team in the Cleveland Guardians’ organization.

The Yellow Jackets defeated St. Edwards 8-2 to punch their ticket to the State Final Four.  Perrysburg finished as DI state runnerup in 2011 and also qualified to the state final four in 2003 but, like the Comets, have never won a state baseball title.

Mason will be making their fourth appearance at State.  In 1987, under legendary coach Ken Gray, the Comets were the Division 2 State Runner-up.  In their 2018 and 2022 appearances, Mason fell in both games in the state semi-final games.

If Mason can defeat Perrysburg, the Comets will be playing for a state championship against the winner of Twinsburg and Delaware Olentangy Berlin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 9 at Canal Park.

STATE SEMI-FINAL

@ Akron's Canal Field 7:00

won 1-0 27-6 17-1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friday, June 7, 2024

The Mason Baseball team is on the doorstep to accomplishing a goal no other Comet team has accomplished in  88 years of their program’s storied history. Friday night before a packed crowd at Akron’s Canal Park, Mason’s Jacob Hanley proved why he is the OHSAA Division 1 Player of the Year.

Hanley stymied the Perrysburg hitters from the mound all night then provided a clutch double in the top of the 7th to produce the only run of the game.  Hanley, the career hits leader for the Comets, drove in senior teammate Alex Koelling (1st Team All-Ohio) who had drawn a two-out walk, then advanced to scoring position.  Jacob then “took care of business” in the bottom of the 7th to seal the win.

Hanley, an Indiana University signee, allowed just one hit on the mound with 11 strikeouts. He improved to 9-1 on the season.

Mason is making its first appearance in the Division 1 State Final.  They were state semifinalists in 2022 and 2018.  In 1987 under legendary head coach Ken Gray, the Comets were Division 2  State Runner-up.

Friday's win tied a new modern-day all-time win record (27 wins 2022) for the Comet baseball program.

The Comets (27-6) will play unranked Twinsburg (24-5) in the Division I state final at 1 p.m. Sunday in Akron.  The Tigers defeated Olentangy Berlin 4-1 earlier in the day to secure their spot in the state final.  Like the Comets, Twinsburg is making their first Division 1 state final appearance.

Twinsburg, in northeast Ohio near Cleveland, is ranked 12th in the state by Prep Baseball Ohio. Kris Kimmel leads the team in batting at .397 with Josh Stalnaker, an Ashland commit, hitting .350 to go along with a 7-1 pitching record.

Of note...The Tigers, coming off a 6-17 campaign in 2023, the baseball program and community were jolted in the offseason by the death last December of head coach Jeff Luca in an auto accident. The unranked but unfazed Tigers are honoring him by wearing Luca’s name and uniform number on their warm-up shirts. The team will be honoring him even further with a highly unexpected run to the state championship game on Sunday.

Michael Bilo, a George Mason signee,  who is coming off a no-hitter against 2023 state champion Moeller last week in the regional final, is the expected starter for Mason in the state final.  He is 4-2,  with an ERA of 1.14.

After Sunday's game, Mason will be saying goodbye to 17 seniors. In addition to Bilo and Hanley, other starters headed to college are Drew Stevens (Ashland), Mark Rutherford (Shelton State CC), Bryce Brannon (Duke), and Alex Koelling (Ohio State).

Tickets are $12 for students and $15 for adults for the state championship games at Canal Park. Children under the age of 5 are permitted complimentary admission.  All tickets will be sold online.

If you can't make the trek to Akron, Mason Sports Radio is providing a live broadcast.  Click their logo to the right to access a link to Sunday’s broadcast.

The OHSAA also provides a free radio broadcast of the state final or a video broadcast with a subscription.

After 88 seasons and three previous Final Four appearances (1987, 2018, 2022), the Comets claimed their first state baseball title with an 8-1 victory over Twinsburg at Akron’s Canal Park. This triumph marks Mason's seventh consecutive win and their 28th of the year, setting a modern-day record for their storied baseball program.

Senior pitcher Michael Bilo (6-2) led the charge with a stellar performance, coming off a no-hit game in the Regional Final against defending champion Moeller. Bilo was lifted in the 6th inning after allowing only 2 hits and striking out 9 batters. The Comets' defense was impeccable, committing no errors in the game.

The scoring started in the second inning when Anthony Sulek singled to right field and scored on a two-out hit by Casey Doner, putting Mason up 1-0. In the top of the fifth inning, Mason extended their lead to 4-0 with a two-run single by senior third baseman Drew Stevens, scoring senior center fielder Brad Hart and senior second baseman Alex Koelling. Senior catcher Mark Rutherford followed with a single to score senior first baseman Jake Hanley.

Mason sealed the game in the top of the sixth inning with four more runs. Hart and Rutherford each contributed 2 RBIs, extending the Comets' lead. Twinsburg managed to score their only run in the bottom of the sixth on three walks and a wild pitch.

In the final inning, sophomore reliever Ben Hanley shut down Twinsburg, with senior Alex Koelling making a diving catch for the final out, sparking a jubilant celebration on the field.

The Comets (28-6), ranked No. 7 in the state coaches’ poll and No. 16 nationally by MaxPreps, navigated a challenging path to the state championship. This journey included their sixth consecutive GMC championship (ninth overall), fourth consecutive Southwest District title (15th overall), and fourth Regional title.

Mason is the first GMC school to win an OHSAA Baseball Title since Lakota East in 2011. Previous GMC champions include Lakota West (2007), Hamilton (1983, 1998), and Fairfield (1984, 1991). Since the 2000-01 season, Mason's athletic programs have now secured 26 Division 1 State Team Titles across various OHSAA interscholastic sports.

The Comets will bid farewell to 17 seniors who have significantly contributed to the 45040 Baseball program over their four-year careers.

Congratulations to this year’s Comet players (active roster below) and Head Coach Curt Bly (11th season) along with his outstanding coaching staff (see below).

A TRIBUTE TO ROD RUSSELL

Beginning in 2006, The Mason Track and Cross Country Programs dedicated the Mason Invitational to Rod Russell: long-time teacher, coach, and Athletic Director.

Rod Russell retired from education in 2006, after thirty-one years of service. Upon graduation from the College of Wooster, Rod taught and coached at Little Miami High School for four years. In 1979, Rod began his teaching and coaching career at Mason High School. Rod served as a mathematics and computer science teacher while coaching cross country and track and field for twelve years. In 1991, Rod began his tenure as athletic director for Mason City Schools.

Under Rod’s leadership, Mason’s athletic department has grown from 24 teams in 1991 to over 74 teams today. Rod has prided himself on providing opportunities for student-athletes in our community and has served as a positive role model for all the coaches in our district.

Rod has worked with administrators, community members, parents and coaches in order to provide Mason with the finest athletic facilities in southwest Ohio. These facilities have served as host sites for numerous OHSAA district and regional competitions with Rod serving as meet manager in track and field, girls and boys basketball, baseball, and softball.

Under Rod’s guidance our athletic teams captured over eighty league championships, twenty-two district championships, seven regional titles, three state runner-up titles, and two state championships. Mason was recognized as a Harold Meyer Sportsmanship award winner for numerous seasons.

Rod served as the Southwest District Executive Board for eight years. He served as Secretary, Vice President, and President during that time. Rod was nominated and chosen by his peers as Ohio’s Athletic Director of the Year in 2003 and also received the Distinguished Service award by the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Most importantly, Rod always prided himself on maintaining the integrity of interscholastic sports. He emphasized the importance of sportsmanship, hard work, and developing all aspects of the student-athlete.

Rod and his wife Dorothy still reside in Mason and have two children, Brooke and Blair.
